Yara

Yara of Nizhova is the sole healer of Marzanna's Reach, a village of forty households in the crease of a valley in northern Nizhova. She inherited both her vocation and her gift from her mother, who walked into the forest one February morning when Yara was twelve and never returned. Since then, Yara has raised her younger brother Piotr, maintained the household, and served her village. All while concealing an ability she can never reveal.

Dark hair, often worn in a tight braid against her skull. Brown eyes described as steady and direct. Calloused, working hands, roughened at the finger pads, nails cut short and clean, from ten years of grinding remedies and applying compresses. She wears a dark coat, slightly too large for her, with worn but well-maintained boots. Her appearance is practical and unadorned.

Practical, observant, and fiercely protective of the people she loves. Yara leads with competence, she enters every room counting exits, reading bodies, assessing threats. She is blunt without being cruel, honest in her medical assessments, and deeply private about everything else. Years of hiding her gift have made her an expert at selective truth. She lies fluently when necessary and hates that she is good at it.

Yara possesses a hereditary gift: she can sense death. It manifests as physical sensation: a cold that pools at the base of her skull, pressure behind her eyes, vibration in her teeth. Near the dying, the sensation settles in, patient and certain. Near the sealed magic of Koschmark, it becomes a directional hum she can follow like a compass. The ability is instinctive, constant, and invisible to anyone who does not know what they are looking at. Yara has spent her life disguising it as medical intuition.
