Captain Reznik

The Captain of The Guard

Loyal to the bone. The man Kazimir trusts when the patrols go quiet and someone has been seen on the ridge where no one should be.

Biography

Reznik is the best soldier the Deathless King has commanded in three centuries. He is the protagonist of The Man Who Stayed, one of the two protagonists of Where The Shadow Fell alongside Kazimir, and one of the central characters in the series. He is the Captain of the Guard in Koschmark. He handles security, patrols, prisoner interrogations, and tactical operations.

Appearance

A scar under his left eye that has faded to a pale line. He stands with one hand behind his back and the other resting near the hilt of his sword, from habit rather than ceremony. He is described as possessing stillness, reserve, and discipline. He is fifty-four, pale and sweat-slicked from wounds, but still standing through force alone.

Personality

Reserved, disciplined, unshakable. Reznik says 'my lord' and means it. He does not usually question orders, but he hesitates visibly when orders trouble him, giving Kazimir the space to reconsider without forcing the issue. He is loyal to Kazimir, and his loyalty has been earned over years of watching an immortal king govern without complaint.

Abilities

No supernatural abilities. Reznik's skill is military: combat prowess, tactical judgment, and an instinct for survival refined over decades.

Key Facts

He has survived longer in Kazimir's service than most. Competence is the reason. Stubbornness is the other.
He does not flinch. Other men in the court press themselves against walls when Kazimir passes. Reznik does not move because Reznik does not need to.
When something goes wrong at the border, Reznik is the one who tells Kazimir because he is the one Kazimir will listen to without having to be told twice.
