Sera Valen
The Practitioner
They will come. You don't know what's been waiting.
Sera's last words, on the bank, dying
Biography
She arrived at the Berezov estate on horseback with six books, an iron tool case, a clay bowl of ash, and a working knowledge of the Berezov covenant that exceeded anything in the estate's own records. She said she had been sent by the school at Dolinvast to reinforce the failing ward. She was lying about the school. She was not lying about the knowledge.
She knew the covenant's architecture. She knew the woman in the river by name. She knew what the anchor stones were and where they sat and what the ward required to hold. She called the binding a structure, like a building: foundations, walls, roof. The woman in the river was the load-bearing wall. She said this without hesitation. The hesitation would have been the tell.
She moved into the guest room at the end of the second-floor hall. She unpacked her books and her tools and her symbols in a language the household could not read. She ate at the long table and talked about the settlements and the families and asked questions nobody else had thought to ask. She drove the questions in at dusk and came back to them at dawn in a different shape. She made him feel that carrying the land alone was something she could help him carry.
Her smell was clove and bitter almond and something warm beneath both. Dragan Sokolin's letter called her an expelled practitioner operating outside the school's authority with fabricated credentials. Dangerous.
She was dangerous. She was also right about the boundary. That is the problem Lazar is left with.
Appearance
Dark hair. Dark eyes. A long stride. She sat a horse well. She moved around a room as though she had mapped it before she entered. She wore a linen shirt that was too large for her and she knew it suited her and she wore it anyway. She smelled of clove and bitter almond and something warm underneath that both were covering.
Personality
She was warm where warmth served her and precise where warmth did not. She believed she was right. She almost certainly was right about the boundary, and whether that makes what she did better or worse is a question the series has not finished answering. She was not purely a manipulator. She genuinely cared about what she called the work, the covenants, the structures that held the world together. She also sent two men with blades to take a stone from a young lord who had nearly died to carry it out of a mountain.
Abilities
She can read the architecture of bindings the way a mason reads a wall. She knows the language of practitioners, the notation, the shorthand within shorthand. She activated a safeguard built into the Berezov covenant that its original maker intended as a reset mechanism. She had access to agents and resources that suggested an organization behind her. Whether the school she claimed expelled her is part of that organization or opposed to it is not known.
Key Facts
•She had an answer for everything. The answers came without hesitation. This was either competence or preparation and is the question nobody got to resolve before it was too late.
•She knew the name of a woman in Breza she had not been told about. She knew about a sow at Lipniki nobody had mentioned. She had been gathering information before she arrived.
•She sent three riders in four weeks. Different each time. The letters were in the notation. Lazar could not read them and she knew he could not read them.
•The red earth of Dolinvast never washed fully out from under a practitioner's nails. Her nails were clean.
