Branimir Dragovicz
The Mercenary
Biography
Branimir Dragovicz came from Mezhkraya, the fragmented kingdoms between the Siverna and the eastern reaches. The region produced two reliable exports: timber and mercenaries. Bran was not the timber.
He learned to fight young. Not in a school, not under a master-at-arms. In market squares, in stable yards, in the alleys behind grain stores where boys settled disputes with whatever came to hand. His size arrived early. By his middle teens he was taller than most grown men in his settlement. The size filled out and the speed arrived with it, and the two together made him something the local fighting circuits had not seen before.
He took his first paid contract at seventeen. By thirty he was the most expensive mercenary working between the Siverna and the eastern valleys, and the expense was justified, because Branimir Dragovicz had never lost a fight. He fought face-to-face. He announced himself by name. He left his opponents alive when the contract permitted it and dead when it required it. He preferred the former.
His final contract took him north.
Appearance
6'9 to 7 feet tall. Built wide through the chest and shoulders, thick through the arms and the neck. Large hands, scarred across both sets of knuckles from years of bare-handed fighting. A face that defaults to warmth. The smile comes easily and leaves reluctantly.
His defining trait is speed. His size suggests slow. His speed contradicts everything his frame promises. The dissonance between what the eye expects and what the body delivers is the first weapon he deploys in any fight.
Personality
Warm. Polite. That is the unsettling thing.
Bran is a charming man. He has nothing to prove through aggression.
He is not cruel. He does not enjoy suffering. He enjoys excellence. He treats violence the way a master carpenter treats timber. A craft. A discipline. A practice refined through years of repetition until the hands moved without the mind.
He talks while fighting.
Abilities
A mercenary of unmatched reputation. Studies his opponents before he meets them. Adapts his weapon selection, footwork, and opening approach to the specific problem each opponent presents.
Carries a war hammer for armored or unusual opponents and two swords at the belt for standard contracts. His fists are his first weapons and his most reliable. At grappling range, his hands are siege equipment.
His reputation was sealed at the ford at Kalev, where he held a position alone against numbers that should have ended him.
